Singles’ Day falls on 11 November (11/11) and began as a Chinese tradition. It has grown into the biggest shopping day in the world - larger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Background and origins
Singles’ Day started in the 1990s among Chinese university students as a counterpoint to Valentine’s Day - a day to celebrate being single and treat yourself. The date 11/11 was chosen because the ones symbolise solitary individuals. In 2009 the e-commerce giant Alibaba turned the day into a shopping phenomenon, and it has since grown into the largest shopping day in the world by revenue.
