About Black Friday Week
Black Friday Week is the run-up to Black Friday itself, and many retailers now start their campaigns on the Monday. That gives you a whole week to hunt for bargains instead of cramming everything into a single day.
Background - from one day to a whole week
Black Friday Week grew out of Black Friday naturally. As competition between retailers sharpened, many realised they had to release offers earlier to capture attention. The result is a full week of promotions and sales that has changed how the UK shops in November.
Amazon was the first major retailer to stretch the event across a week in the UK, and the big chains followed. Since around 2018 the week has become so established that for many retailers it represents a larger sales period than the Friday itself. British shoppers, who tend to want time to compare and think, have taken to the longer format readily.
How Black Friday Week works in the UK
The week usually follows a clear pattern, with each day having its own character. Monday and Tuesday often focus on individual categories or brands, with new offers released daily. Wednesday and Thursday typically bring the broadest campaigns, with discounts across whole ranges, before Black Friday closes the week as the traditional peak.
Many UK online retailers run “deal of the day” or other time-limited discounts that rotate through the week. Physical stores tend to hold the same prices all week but may add extra promotions on the Friday. The big advantage of Black Friday Week over the day itself is that the pressure is off - you have time to compare prices, read reviews and make considered decisions instead of buying in seconds.
Product categories through the week
More and more retailers spread their offers across the whole week, and it is not unusual for the best prices to appear early. Electronics such as televisions, headphones and laptops are often reduced by 20-40 per cent as early as Monday. Fashion typically has generous campaigns of 30-50 per cent across whole ranges, with discounts deepening towards the end of the week. Beauty and skincare offer promotional pricing on advent calendars and gift sets, while homeware and sport hold good discounts all week.
| Day | Focus | Typical discount |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Individual categories, early offers | 20-30% |
| Tuesday | Brand campaigns | 25-40% |
| Wednesday | Broad range promotions | 25-45% |
| Thursday | Deeper discounts, extra campaigns | 30-50% |
| Friday | Peak day, widest choice | 30-70% |
Common pitfalls
A full week of offers can lead to shopping fatigue and to buying more than you intended, so it is wise to stick to a prepared list. Many people assume the best price always arrives on the Friday, but that is not necessarily true - several of the strongest offers appear early in the week and can be sold out by Friday. Remember too that retailers can change prices over the course of a week, so double-check that the deal you found on Monday still applies before you decide.
Black Friday Week tips
- Plan your purchases before the week starts and note the prices you would be happy to pay.
- Check the offers daily, because new deals appear throughout the week rather than all at once.
- Compare the same product across retailers, as prices can vary considerably between sellers.
