About January Sales

The January sales carry on where the Boxing Day sales leave off and often run the whole month. Retailers need to make room for spring collections, which means the discounts on winter stock can be deeper still than in the days after Christmas.

Background and history

The January sales have existed in British retail for well over a hundred years. Historically January was the month when the great department stores cut prices on the winter season’s remaining stock. It was a period with a clear start and finish, and shoppers queued from early in the morning to catch the best finds.

Today the January sales are more diffuse. They begin on 1 or 2 January - or effectively in the days after Christmas - and can run all month. E-commerce has changed the dynamic: prices are adjusted continuously and new offers appear throughout the period. The underlying principle is the same, though: retailers want the winter surplus gone as quickly as possible.

How the January sales work in the UK

The first week of January still has the widest choice, but the deepest discounts usually come later in the month, when retailers make a final push to clear what is left. Some run a second wave of reductions in the middle of the month, cutting prices on stock that has not moved.

Fashion dominates the January sales, but the period has broadened over the years. Electronics, homeware, sports equipment and travel all run campaigns in January. It is also traditionally the strongest month for gym memberships and fitness equipment, with retailers pitching to new year resolutions.

Product categories and typical discounts

Winter fashion is cleared at 50-70 per cent, and boots, coats and knitwear are at their cheapest of the year. Homeware and interiors see broad campaigns as retailers make way for spring ranges, and electronics is reduced ahead of the new models that arrive in spring.

Fitness equipment and gym memberships have their strongest promotions of the year in January, aimed squarely at new year intentions. Travel is another January category, with holiday operators running early-booking offers for the summer season.

Category Typical discount Note
Winter fashion 50-70% Cheapest of the year
Homeware 30-50% Making way for spring ranges
Electronics 20-40% Ahead of new models
Fitness 20-50% New year campaigns
Travel Early-booking offers For the summer season

Timeline through the month

The first week carries over from the Boxing Day sales, so the range is already picked over even though the discounts are deep - typically 50-70 per cent on what is left. The middle of the month often brings a second wave of reductions on what has not sold, pushing towards 50-70 per cent. The last week of January is the final clearance, with the deepest cuts but a much thinner range, and spring stock starting to appear alongside it.

Common pitfalls

A long sale period tempts you into buying things simply because they are cheap. The winter clothing you buy in late January will not be worn for another nine months, so it is worth being honest about whether you will actually want it then. Check sizing carefully too, as the remaining sale stock is often what did not fit most people, and check the returns terms: an online order keeps its statutory 14-day cancellation right whatever the sale label says, while a shop’s own in-store policy can be shorter on reduced lines.

January sales tips

  • Buy for next winter at the end of the month, when winter stock is at its cheapest.
  • Watch for the second wave of reductions in the middle of the month.
  • Be sceptical about fitness offers - check the minimum term and the price after any introductory period.
