About Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday falls on the Monday after Black Friday and is entirely focused on online shopping. The day started in the United States but has become a firm fixture in the UK too, with particularly good offers on electronics, tech and digital services.
Background and origins
Cyber Monday was created in 2005 by Shop.org, the online arm of the American trade body the National Retail Federation, in response to the growing number of shoppers buying online on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The idea was to give e-commerce its own day, separate from the in-store scramble of Black Friday. It has since grown into one of the biggest online shopping days in the world.
Cyber Monday established itself in the UK alongside Black Friday in the mid-2010s. While Black Friday dominates the attention, Cyber Monday has become the day when pure online retailers and tech specialists put out their strongest campaigns. It has a distinctly digital character that sets it apart from the broader Friday.
How Cyber Monday differs from Black Friday
Where Black Friday tempts with broad discounts both in store and online, Cyber Monday is built entirely around e-commerce. Many retailers hold their best online offers back for this day, and it is not unusual to find unique discounts that were not available on the Friday. Cyber Monday tends to lean more towards tech, software and digital services than Black Friday’s broader range.
Product categories and typical discounts
Electronics and tech dominate Cyber Monday. Laptops, monitors, headphones, smart home products and games consoles are among the most heavily discounted items, sometimes going below their Black Friday prices. Software and digital subscriptions such as VPNs, antivirus, cloud storage and creative tools often hit their lowest prices of the year on this day.
Streaming services for music, film and games typically run promotions with extended free periods or reduced monthly pricing. Gaming, covering titles, accessories and consoles, has strong offers aimed at the digital audience. Online fashion and beauty retailers also release fresh campaigns, particularly those that held back on the Friday.
| Category | Typical discount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics and tech | 20-50% | Can beat Black Friday prices |
| Software and subscriptions | 30-70% | Often the year’s lowest |
| Streaming | Free months or reduced pricing | Watch the renewal price |
| Gaming | 25-60% | Consoles sell out quickly |
Timeline through the day
Some retailers start their Cyber Monday campaigns on Sunday evening, but Monday morning is when most new offers land. Popular products can sell out during the morning, so being early pays. In the afternoon some retailers add short-lived deals, and the evening is your last chance to catch the promotional prices. A few campaigns run into Tuesday, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
Common pitfalls
It is worth knowing that some retailers market Cyber Monday offers that are really unsold Black Friday stock at the same price, so always check whether the deal is genuinely new. Countdowns and “only X left” messages are common tactics that create unnecessary time pressure - take the time to compare prices on Cyber Monday too. Remember also that delivery times can be longer than usual because of the volume of orders after a full weekend of promotions.
Cyber Monday tips
- Focus on tech and digital services, which is where the day’s strongest offers sit.
- Check the renewal price on any subscription offer, not just the introductory rate.
- Add items to your basket in advance - many retailers send reminders with extra voucher codes.
