About Boxing Day Sales
The Boxing Day sales are a British institution, running from 26 December into the first week of January. Both high-street shops and online retailers put out their biggest reductions in this period, and it is often when you find the lowest prices of the whole year.

The Boxing Day sales go back well over a century in British retail. Long before Black Friday arrived, the days after Christmas were by far the most important sale period of the year. Queueing outside the big department stores in the early hours of 26 December was as much a part of Christmas as the dinner and the presents.
Although Black Friday has taken some of the attention, the Boxing Day sales remain one of the best shopping periods of the year. Many shoppers prefer to wait until after Christmas, when they know exactly what they still need or want. That makes the period a more considered one than November’s impulse-driven promotions.

The sales usually run from Boxing Day itself to around the second week of January, but the largest and best offers appear in the first week. Unlike Black Friday, which is a short, sharp event, the Boxing Day sales give you time to shop thoughtfully. Physical stores still play a bigger role here than in other sale periods, and many people combine time off with a trip to a shopping centre or a designer outlet. Online, most retailers now open their sales on Christmas Day itself.
Retailers need to clear space for spring ranges and new stock, which means they are willing to cut prices sharply to empty the warehouses. Discounts can be deeper than during Black Friday, because this is genuine stock clearance rather than a planned promotional price. There is a further advantage: many retailers run an extended returns window over the new year for items bought as gifts.

Fashion is the biggest category in the Boxing Day sales. Autumn and winter ranges are cleared at 40-70 per cent off to make way for spring, and winter boots and shoes go at heavily reduced prices. Homeware such as textiles, decorations and furniture sees substantial reductions, as does sports equipment including ski and winter gear. Electronics that did not sell over Christmas often gets a further cut, and children’s clothing from surplus Christmas stock typically carries the deepest discounts of all.
