About Black Friday
Black Friday falls on the Friday after the fourth Thursday in November and has become the most anticipated shopping day of the UK year. Hundreds of retailers put out their best prices - often 30-70% off everything from electronics and fashion to homeware and beauty.
Background and origins
Black Friday started in the United States, where the day after Thanksgiving traditionally marks the opening of the Christmas shopping season. The term was in use in Philadelphia as early as the 1960s, when police used it to describe the crowds filling the shops. It later took on a more positive meaning - the day retailers’ books moved from red into black.
Black Friday arrived in the UK around 2010, when Amazon ran its first UK event, and it broke through properly in 2013 and 2014 as the supermarkets and high-street chains joined in. After a few chaotic years of in-store scrambles, the event moved decisively online. It is now the single biggest retail day in the British calendar and stretches well beyond the Friday itself.
How Black Friday works in the UK
Unlike the early years, Black Friday in the UK is now overwhelmingly an online event. Most shoppers buy on the web, though physical stores still run promotions. Many retailers open their offers at midnight going into Friday, while others release deals in waves through the day.
British shoppers spend most on electronics, clothing and beauty during Black Friday. The prices can be genuinely good, but it pays to be prepared - not every “discount” is measured against a price the item actually sold at.
Product categories and typical discounts
Electronics and tech draw the most buyers on Black Friday. Televisions, headphones, laptops and phones are among the most wanted items, with discounts typically between 20 and 50 per cent. The strongest tech deals tend to appear overnight and early on Friday morning, and popular models can sell out fast.
Fashion is the second-largest category, with both premium labels and value chains running 30-60 per cent off selected lines. Beauty and fragrance usually have generous offers on gift sets, skincare and make-up, while homeware and furniture tempt with reductions on everything from sofas to small accessories. Sport and leisure has grown quickly as a Black Friday category, with fitness equipment and outdoor gear heavily reduced.
| Category | Typical discount | Best time to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics | 20-50% | Overnight into Friday |
| Fashion | 30-60% | Friday morning |
| Beauty | 25-50% | All day |
| Homeware | 20-40% | Friday morning |
| Sport and leisure | 25-50% | Early in the day |
Timeline - what to expect
In the week before Black Friday many retailers reveal which products are going into the sale, and newsletters and apps give previews that help you plan. Overnight into Friday the online stores release their offers, and popular products can sell out within hours. Friday morning has the widest choice and the most live promotions, while some retailers add new deals or extend successful ones through the afternoon and evening. A few offers carry on over the weekend, but the range thins noticeably by Saturday.
Common pitfalls
Several things are worth watching for. Some retailers raise prices weeks in advance and then cut them back to “sale” level, so it always pays to check the price history before you commit. Countdown timers and “only X left” messages are designed to prompt impulse buys - sticking to your list is the simplest defence. Remember to include delivery costs when comparing prices, since a good discount can be swallowed by expensive delivery. Check the returns terms as well. Anything you buy online carries a statutory 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, whatever a sale label says, but a shop’s own goodwill policy for in-store purchases can be shorter on promotional lines - so if you are buying on the high street, ask before you pay.
Black Friday tips
- Write a list of what you want and compare prices beforehand, so you know whether the offers are genuinely good.
- Sign up to newsletters - many retailers send their best deals to subscribers before they go public.
- Use price comparison and price history sites to verify that the sale price really is the lowest.
- Move quickly on popular products, especially electronics, as the best deals often sell out fast.
- Set a budget in advance and stick to it, however tempting the offers look.
